In response to the growing demand from enthusiasts seeking a larger blade and enhanced ergonomics for larger hands, Spyderco developed the prototype for the Native Chief in 1999. This design retained the pocket-friendly width of the Native but extended its overall length by almost two inches. After showcasing the prototype at trade shows and customer gatherings, Spyderco gathered feedback and refined the design to maximize its potential.
The journey of the Native Chief took a significant turn with the development of the Native 5, the fifth-generation evolution of its predecessor. The Native 5, featuring a refined lockback mechanism, marked a breakthrough in Spyderco's commitment to Constant Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.). This advanced lockback mechanism became the key element needed to bring the Native Chief to life.
The Native Chief Lightweight maintains the timeless design of the Spyderco Native but extends its overall length by about one-third. Crafted with a lightweight, fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle, this model is a lighter evolution of its predecessor. The injection-molded handle incorporates high-traction Bi-Directional Texturing, ensuring a secure grip, while its linerless construction reduces the weight by 21%. The precision-machined lockback mechanism ensures reliable performance.
The Native Chief Lightweight features a full-flat ground blade made from CTS-BD1N stainless steel, offering excellent cutting performance. The blade incorporates a fully accessible Trademark Round Hole, complementing the knife's symmetrical, completely ambidextrous design.
